The Solid South
It may be of some small interest to note that through the rein of President Jimmy Carter, Alabama was a member in fine standing of what used to be called, “The Solid South.” This meant that the south could always be counted upon to vote Democrat.
Except for a few whack jobs and outcasts, the south had been democrat ruled since the unpleasantness of the 1860′s. You may have known that.
What you may not have known was that the Democrat party crossed racial lines. Both blacks and whites were solid democrats.
In Alabama in the 60′s, Alabama boasted a unique democrat dialect….The George Wallace Democrat. You may have known that.
What you may not have known is that the George Wallace Democrats crossed racial lines. Both black and whites were solid George Wallace democrats. You might not believe it, and you may not even like it, but it is a historical fact.
Later, as Carter wound down and Regan spun up, except for a few whack jobs, white democrats fled en mass to the Republican party. Blacks stayed democrat. This held true for all the southern states, Alabama included. So you might say that our Alabama version of Republicans sprang forth whole from the loins of the old George Wallace Democrats.
It is one of the ironies of our modern political situation as to how our various political dialects got to where we are now, Even better, it is doubtful that 10% of the electorate even knows these simple facts. How tragic to cast a vote from on top of a mountain of ignorance.
